The fit guide: shoulders, rise and hem

Wool coat on a rail

Three measurements decide whether a garment reads as expensive: shoulder, rise and hem.

Shoulder

The seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone - not past it, unless the cut is deliberately dropped. A shoulder that is 2cm too wide makes a coat look borrowed.

Rise

High rise sits at the navel, mid rise an inch below. For trousers, the rise decides the leg line: a high rise lengthens, a low rise shortens. Check the rise before the waist size.

Hem

  • Trousers: one soft break at the shoe, no pooling.
  • Coats: mid-calf, so it works with trousers and dresses.
  • Dresses: mid-calf for day, above the ankle for evening.

How to measure yourself

Bust at the fullest point, waist at the narrowest (usually an inch above the navel), hip at the widest. Keep the tape level and parallel to the floor. Compare with the size table on each product page.

When to size up

Knitwear and anything you will layer. Silk and bias cuts: take your true size, because they relax with wear.

Ask us: send your measurements and we will reply with one size.
